Step 2: Apply for a job as a translator.|||Well, obviously you first need to know fluent Japanese and English (and fluency in other languages couldn't hurt either.) In order to grasp a full understanding of the Japanese language, I would suggest living there for at least a month to come to understand slang terms, grammatical shortcuts, idioms, etc.





Also, you must be a good writer in English. People don't want to hire you to translate things that, while accurate, sound like they were written by a 2nd grader.





Find a type of translating you like best: law, novels, medical, business, news, movies, science work, text books, oral translation (interpreting). You could also obtain a teaching degree and become an English teacher in Japan.





Most importantly, get a degree in Japanese translation! I would not suggest getting an "online degree" because sometimes companies don't value them as much as people who got their degrees by attending a physical campus.
